‘Defense Innovation Days’ Event Hosted By SENEDIA

Congressional, Pentagon, and Defense Industry Leaders to Gather for Inaugural ‘Defense Innovation Days’ in Newport, RI this September

Event will focus on current trends within the defense industry and the future of technology and innovation

Middletown, RI – Congressional, Pentagon, and defense industry leaders will gather in Newport, Rhode Island this September for a major event focusing on the future of innovation and technology in the defense arena. Hosted by the Southeastern New England Defense Industry Alliance (SENEDIA), the event will be one of the first of its kind in the region to bring policymakers and industry representatives together to discuss new trends within the defense industry and technologies being developed and deployed to military forces across the globe. Several prominent leaders within the defense arena are already confirmed to speak at the event, including Sen. Jack Reed (RI), Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (RI), and Frank Kendall, Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics (AT&L). Other participants will include Rep. James Langevin (RI), Rep. David Cicilline (RI), and Rep. Joe Courtney (CT). Also scheduled to attend are, Dr. Stefanie Tompkins, Director of the Defense Sciences Office at DARPA, Dyke Weatherington, Director, Unmanned Warfare & Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance at DoD, and David Kelly, CEO, Bluefin Robotics, among others. Molly Donohue Magee, Executive Director of SENEDIA said, “This will be a rare opportunity for business leaders within the defense industry to learn from one another about emerging technologies and hear directly from our nation’s leaders that are helping to craft our defense priorities for years to come.” “Our goal is to provide a unique opportunity to bring together people who are developing cutting edge innovations that can be deployed to deter war and protect the security of our country,” Magee added. “We wanted to give policymakers an opportunity to speak to those companies, both big and small, and give the companies insight into future acquisition opportunities." U.S. Senator Jack Reed, the Chairman of the Armed Services Subcommittee on Seapower and a member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense said, "I am proud to support SENEDIA's effort to bring together policymakers and business leaders from across New England and the country to discuss some of the most important trends in the defense of our nation. Rhode Island and New England are home to some of the most important companies helping to develop the technologies needed to protect our nation, and Newport is the perfect place to host such an important event." “Initiating a forum where policymakers and business leaders within the defense arena can engage with and learn from one another is vitally important,” said U.S. Congressman Jim Langevin. “As home to both the Naval Undersea Warfare Center and a number of companies in the defense industry, Newport is an excellent setting for such an important gathering, and I look forward to participating.” SENEDIA, an alliance of defense related businesses and organizations, draws its members from Rhode Island, southeastern Massachusetts and Connecticut. Members of the group include Banneker Industries, MIKEL, Progeny Systems, Purvis Systems, Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems, Rite Solutions, SAIC and Sea Corp among others. The event will take place from Wednesday, September 3, through Friday, September 5, at the Marriott Newport, in Newport, RI. Current topics for discussion include: Innovation from the Technology Perspective; State of Foreign Affairs and the Effect on the Defense Industry; Innovation from the Warfighter’s Perspective; the Maritime Cybersecurity Center; Innovation from the Unmanned Vehicle Perspective; and others.
