Avery, a partner with more than 25 years of experience in a broad range of regulatory and transactional matters for clients in the energy, telecommunications, and transportation industries. Jim’s practice focuses on representing utilities, generators, aggregators and suppliers before the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities and the Massachusetts Energy Facilities Siting Board as well as other state utility commissions across the region and nation. Jim also represents clients in the development and siting of energy facilities, including wind, solar, biomass and natural gas-fired electric generating facilities, electric and natural gas transmission lines, combined heat and power facilities, liquefied natural gas facilities and telecommunications facilities. Prior to joining Pierce Atwood, Jim was a partner in the Energy, Utilities & Environmental Practice Group at Brown Rudnick LLP. Jim has represented one of the world's leading developers of renewable resources and the world’s largest developer of wind generation resources in securing regulatory approvals necessary to complete its acquisition of a major utility holding company. He has also represented the developer of the largest biomass generation facility in the nation in siting and contracting matters. Jim also represented a gas utility in securing the necessary regulatory and environmental approvals for the first liquefied natural gas facility in Massachusetts in over 35 years and the permanent financing of the facility.  In addition, Jim has negotiated energy efficiency, performance contracts and gas and electricity supply arrangements for industrial and government clients. In addition to his regulatory and rate work with energy companies and utilities, Jim also represents clients in a variety of commercial and financial transactions, including acquisitions, mergers, corporate restructurings, contracts, and financings. Jim earned his J.D. cum laude from Boston University School of Law and his B.A. cum laude from Colgate University. Pierce Atwood’s growth strategy is defined by the careful and deliberate addition of well-known, well-respected and well-established legal talent in our key areas of expertise who want to be part of our firm’s dedication to client service. Our regional footprint and lean, efficient approach then allow our practitioners, new and old, to provide superior value to our clients. Last December we added seven attorneys from the Providence, RI firm Little Bulman Medeiros & Whitney PC, regionalizing our construction and complex litigation practices. Shortly thereafter, we doubled our Boston office space and have since added eight new attorneys in some of our key practice areas: energy, environment, M&A, private equity, venture capital, corporate law, construction, real estate, land use, trademarks and copyrights, and patents. All of these attorneys arrive having had substantial experience at some of the most well-known firms in Boston and beyond. Our recent growth efforts are consistent with our goal of being the premier regional law firm in New England, while ensuring that services are provided with the quality, teamwork, and professionalism that people expect from a Pierce Atwood attorney. In the past year, we have added 16 attorneys, across two offices and several disciplines, each of whom reflect our high standards and inclusive culture ### Pierce Atwood LLP, a leading New England law firm, and the largest in northern New England, has 140 attorneys that serve regional, national, and international clients from offices in Portland and Augusta, Maine; Portsmouth, New Hampshire; Boston, Massachusetts; Providence, Rhode Island; Stockholm, Sweden; and Washington, DC.  Follow us on Twitter @PierceAtwoodLLP.   If you would rather not receive future communications from Pierce Atwood, let us know by clicking here.
