SBANE Educational Series Shifts to Focus on “Taking the Board Plunge”

A Three Member Panel Discusses Five Essential Ingredients to Optimizing Board Effectiveness

Waltham- The Smaller Business Association of New England (SBANE) presented a new topic in a recent educational series held in Waltham. “Taking the Board Plunge”…Five Essential Ingredients To Optimize Board Effectiveness was presented by a three member panel and two moderators. The event was the first of its kind and very well received. The program focused on the process of getting started in creating and setting up a Board and was moderated by Don Andrade and Ed Ostrowski, co-founders of the Director’s Resource Group, established to assist business owners in developing effective boards for their organizations. The three panel members were Jeffrey Cicolini, partner at Alexander, Aronson, Finning & Co, P.C., William Rodgers, a founding member of Tarlow Breed Hart & Rodgers, P.C. and H. Scott Sanborn of TD Bank. Each panelist was chosen for their experience and expertise in this area and presented their best practices in managing both a Board of Directors and a Board of Advisors. Dana Bottorff, Marketing and Business Development Manager of G.T. Reilly & Company said “The seminar was very thorough and well organized. For a private company considering creating a board, this seminar broke down various issues and strategies into easily understood steps”. The moderators and panelist broke down the five essential ingredients; structure, composition, communication and protocols, commitment and assessment and continuous improvement. This seminar gathered a wide and diverse audience from a number of industries, both for profit and not for profit. "I found the workshop informative and encouraging, given my interest in building our Board of Directors and finding the best skills to meet our organization's needs. As a non-profit leader, I also valued the opportunity to meet other business and organizational leaders who share an interest in networking and finding the best membership for board success", said Julia de la Torre of Primary Source, a nonprofit in Watertown focused on providing better education by bringing an understanding of the global community. SBANE hosts a variety of educational series throughout the year. For more information about SBANE or to see the calendar of events, visit www.sbane.org or call 781-890-9070.
