Partners In Health“Providing A Preferential Option In Healthcare For The Poor—The Path For PIH

For centuries, U.S. clinicians and hospitals have dedicated themselves, albeit imperfectly, to the care of the poor. Massachusetts General Hospital, celebrating its 200th anniversary this year, began providing free beds to the indigent sick when it first opened its doors, even though many patients had to apply in writing for admission and could be discharged for “bad morals.”  The first hospital in the United States – Pennsylvania Hospital – was founded in 1751 “to care for the sick, poor and insane who were wandering the streets of Philadelphia.”

Since 1987, Partners In Health (PIH), in concert with Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, has likewise dedicated itself to the health care of poor and marginalized patients throughout the world, beginning in the central highlands of Haiti and now operating in eleven countries. PIH has built local capacity for, and commitment to, the care of the poor and addressed the social forces which underlie the distribution of poor health and disease. Both in developing countries and in the United States, it is very expensive to provide poor care to indigent people.   PIH’s Chief Operating Officer, Paul Zintl, will discuss the organization’s strategy as it continues to help address these challenges in the United States.
